Newsletter 3

It’s time to get rolling if you want to get your film shown. The due date for submissions is July 1st but we’ll probably be somewhat flexible if you run into a snag. For those of you who plan to submit a film, please send me the following information: Title, Summary, Cast and Crew, and Estimated running time.

So far we have a small handful of completed films and many more in various stages of production. If you plan on using our editing equipment it would be a good idea to contact us soon and arrange a time. The equipment is available on a first come first serve basis.

If you missed the announcement before, the films will be shown at 7:30 July 12th in the Silverbow Back Room. The doors will open around 7ish if you want to secure a seat and grab a bite to eat. If the Silverbow sells enough food it won’t cost us anything for the space so come hungry and drink heavily :)

Entries for the summer festival are due by Monday July 1st, 2002 and should be in one of the following formats: Mini-DV, Hi-8, VHS-C, or VHS.

I also want to extend a huge thank you to Bud Curtis and the folks at Alaska Grafix who have given us free onscreen advertising for June as a part of their community artist program.

Networking

We held our first meeting last month and showed a few folks examples of films and how to use our editing equipment. I don’t know if we’ll have any more meetings because that’s always a stale environment but I do want to figure out how to build a better network for filmmakers in the community. I was thinking of some sort of medium scale community movie project that could involve several people and give artists a chance to work together but any other ideas would be appreciated.

Editing and Shooting Q&A

Q: What is the equipment and software you’re letting people come in and edit with?
A: I have a Frankenstein machine running Windows XP. It functions reliably (knock on wood) and has fully licensed versions of Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Adobe Premiere 6.0, Adobe After Effects 5.5, and
Alias|Wavefront Maya 4.0 which you’re free to use in the creation of
your short films.

Q: I don’t have a camera do you have one I can borrow?
A: It gets loaned out frequently but I do have a hi-8 camera that I’ll let people borrow. It takes great pictures under good lighting and doesn’t loose much in translation to digital.

Newsletter 2

It’s official, we’ve reserved the Silverbow Backroom for July 12th and the show will start right around 7:30. The room seats about 80 and I’m pretty certain we can pack it. I’m also thinking about a second showing possibly the next Thursday for those who miss out. Entries for the summer festival are due by Monday July 1st, 2002 and should be in one of the following formats: Mini-DV, Hi-8, VHS-C, or VHS. If you plan on working in another format get a hold of me and we’ll see what we can work out.

Our other big news is that we’ll be having a meeting for anyone interested in getting more information or discussing a concept they have. The meeting will be Wednesday, May 8th at 6:00 and will be held in the Rainy Day Room. That’s our top secret meeting room located down the hall from Heritage Coffee, suite 103 in the Emporium building to be exact.

Editing and Shooting Q&A

Q: What if I’ve never made a film?
A: Fantastic! If it turns out bad you can tell people it was your first
film and if it’s good then you’ll be hailed as some sort of prodigal
cinematic genius!

Q: Wasn’t the previous question addressed in the last newsletter?
A: Yup, I just wanted to reiterate that anyone can participate.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in making a film. Hope those ideas are churning and turning and twisting around.

Welcome to the Juneau Underground Motion Picture Society, an informal club created to bring together local film making enthusiasts and promote community awareness of their art.

Currently we are in the process of preparing for our summer shorts film festival which we hope to show at either the JDHS auditorium or Silverbow Backroom in mid-July. This festival is open to all Juneau film makers and the only rule so far is that films must run 15 minutes or less. We hope for a wide variety of styles and genres and don’t plan to limit entries based on content.

Entries for the summer festival are due by Monday July 1st, 2002.

Editing and Shooting Q&A

Q: What format is preferred for submission?
A: We prefer Mini DV tape but we will also work with VHS tape, Hi-8 tape, or Uncompressed QuickTime or Windows Media files.

Q: I don’t have editing equipment is there any available?
A: Lucid Reverie will be allowing free use of their editing computer for participants and will also be hosting free tutorials by appointment. This is on a first come first serve basis and will be limited to times when supervision can be provided. The university has some great resources for students and there are probably other resources in the community but we are not aware of them at this time.

Q: How about cameras?
A: Film with whatever you can find. Try friends, families, or schools, there are lots of cameras out there that need to be dusted off.

Q: What if I’ve never made a film?
A: Fantastic! If it turns out bad you can tell people it was your first film and if it’s good then you’ll be hailed as some sort of prodigal cinematic genius!

Equipment Department Update

The equipment department and equipment fund is available to all artists working on films for the JUMP Society. Anything purchased with equipment fund money will remain the property of the JUMP Society and purchase preference will be given to items that are reusable or will benefit more than one film maker. Some suggested items that might be useful are lights, movie props, or tape. All expenditures are overseen by Aaron Suring, the current equipment fund czar.
